Overnight Plant Relocation for Eurovia

Road-surfacing plant has to be where the work is, and the work moves. Relocating it between live sites means the machine is needed at the far end first thing, which leaves a narrow window to move something large through a road network that is busy for most of the hours you would normally use.

Doing that move in daylight would have meant putting a slow, wide load into traffic that was already there, with the disruption and the risk that brings for everyone on the road as well as for the load.

We scheduled the move overnight, which is the honest answer to a job like this: work with the traffic rather than against it. The route was planned for the vehicle and the load rather than for the shortest distance, with the quiet hours used deliberately instead of by accident.

Both sites were set up for the movement before the night started. The collection point was ready, the receiving site knew when the load was arriving and where it was going, and the driver had the plan before leaving the yard rather than being talked through it on the phone at two in the morning.

Night work changes the risk profile rather than reducing it. Visibility is lower, and the people at both ends are working outside normal hours. The load was secured for the route it was taking, checked before departure, and the movement was planned so the vehicle was never doing anything unexpected on an unlit road.

Site rules at both ends were agreed in advance, the unloading area was prepared, and our driver worked to the receiving site’s arrangements. Insurance cover was in place, as it is on every movement we make.

The plant was relocated safely and was on site ready for work, with the road network barely aware it had happened. Disruption to other road users was minimal because the move was in the hours where there were fewest of them, and risk was kept down because nothing about the night was improvised.
